ptcsl20 series www.vishay.com vishay bccomponents revision: 04-dec-15 3 document number: 29012 for technical questions, contact: nlr@vishay.com this document is subject to change without notice. the products described herein and this document are subject to specific disclaimers, set forth at www.vishay.com/doc?91000 application specific data negative temperature coefficient (ntc) ther mistors are well known for te mperature sensing. what is not well known, however, is that positive temperature coefficient (ptc) thermistors can be used for thermal protection. although their operating principles are similar, the appl ications are very different; whereas ntc ther mistors sense and measure temperature over a defined range, ptc thermistors swit ch at one particular temperature. just like thermostats they protect such equipment and componen ts as motors, transformers, power transistors and thyristors against over temperature. a ptc thermistor is less expensive than a thermostat, and its switch temperature can be more accurately specified. it is also smaller and easier to design-in to electronic circuitry. so how does it work? the ptc thermistor is mounted in therma l contact with the equipment to be protected, and connected into the bridge arm of a comparato r circuit, such as shown in fig. 1. at norma l temperature, the ptc thermistor resistance (r p ) is lower than r s (see fig. 2), so the comparators output voltage v o will be low. if an equipmen t over temperature occurs, the ptc thermistor will quickly heat up to it s trigger or nominal re ference temperature t n , whereupon its resist ance will increase to a value much higher than r s , causing v o to switch to a high level sufficient to acti vate an alarm, relay or power shutdown circuit. application examples fig. 1 - typical comparator circuit fig. 2 - typical switch characteristic fig. 3 - temperature protection of 3-phase electric motor ptc thermistor r p r l r f r s r1 r2 + ? v o trigger temperature t n v o t (c) r p > r s (r1 = r2) r p < r s (r1 = r2) + + + a s s oon a s one or more of the winding s become s too hot, the motor i s s witched off.
